1958, 16ft. Peterborough Seafarer Hardtop

This vessel is currently for sale - $6000. (without trailer)

(owned by Keith & Sarah Robinson)

This boat was purchased new by a man in Halifax, NS. It originally had a 40 HP Mercury short shaft. They had cut the transom. I bought it in 1984. It was at a lake north of Halifax. We brought it back to Ontario by way of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York, crossing from Cape Vincent, NY to Kingston via Wolfe Island. It has been kept at our cottage on Lake Rosseau, Windermere the whole time we have had it. We have used it extensively and enjoyed many outings. In 2002 the motor, a 1979 Johnson 55 HP was rebuilt. In 2003-2006 the boat had a lot of work done. A new transom, keel, several ribs, bottom fibreglassed. The boat was completely stripped inside and out and refinished with 5 coats of varnish. We have used it some this summer and it is performing very will. It was out of the water for 3 years.

We also have three other Peterborough craft. One is a Handy Boy 15'. We bought this boat a year ago. It had been refinished. It has a 1956 Johnson 30 HP Javelin that we had repainted. It had belonged to a camp at Woodstock. Also a 1958 Peterborough canoe that was recovered three or four years ago.

Our cottage was built in 1923 by my ex-wife's grandfather who was a minister. It is on Tobin Island on Lake Rosseau. Therre was an old canoe under the cottage for years. I didn't know the make. I took it to a Mr. Roy Allman near Huntsville who builds and restores canoes. He did a wonderful restoration. It is 16' long and is made of basswood. When he cleaned the varnish etc. from it two brass plaques appeared. To my surprise it is a Peterborough and Mr. Allman feels it was built about 1900. It has an interesting history. My mother-in-law's father gave it to her for her 18th birthday which would be in 1916. It was used then and was purchased in Oakville. It has been at the cottage since 1923. My mother-in-law was married on August 1, 1927 at the cottage and went on her honeymoon in this canoe from the cottage to the village o Rosseau. There are pictures of it at the cottage through the years. It had a sail in some pictures.

Hoping you will find this interesting. I am including some pictures of these boats.

We have reluctantly decided to sell the Seafarer as we have no room for it now. It was leaking badly and we took it to a boat builder in Bracebridge who wanted $15,000 which was out of the question so we decided to do the work ourselves. We had Geisler of Powassen fibreglass the bottom as this was the only reasonable way to save the boat. In the meantime we bought the Handy Boy so we don't need two boats.
